Denise Booth (she/her)

Lumos Team Doula

Denise lives in Cross Plains with her husband (her highschool sweetheart), 3 kiddos, 2 dogs, a bunny and occasionally a rescue turtle or two. She has her masters degree in Speech and Language Pathology and practiced in the Madison School District before being a stay at home mom for 16 years.

Denise was ready for a new direction and after hearing from some friends that she would make a great doula, she decided to learn more about the profession. It was pretty much love at first sight when she realized that she could combine her passion of pregnancy and birth with her caring and nurturing qualities into a career. Once she made the decision to become a doula, it has been full speed ahead with immersing herself in all things doula.

What she loves about this work:
Knowing every birth is unique; supporting people where they are at; appreciation for families allowing us to enter an intimate bubble, listening, connecting, endless learning; that moment of amazing emotion when the birthing parent and/or partner first lays eyes on their babe and I get all kinds of choked up

Likes: moments that my kiddos are getting along, treating myself to coffee shops and super dark chocolate, lakes (swimming, boating, stand up paddle boarding, the scenery), dogs, music (I can get really lost in a good song), being in the moment, cooking, arugula, cute things kids say, my oldest daughter’s artistic abilities, my son’s passion for fishing, my youngest daughter’s passion for all critters (she even thinks snakes are adorable and snuggle worthy)

Dislikes: snakes, cocktail sauce, being cold, rudeness, shopping for clothes, and my house when it’s messy (which is always)

Dream Vacation: A beach, good food, good scenery and good company whether it’s Greece, Belize or Northern Wisconsin (I am flexible that way!)

Words to describe Denise: good listener, helpful, kind, nurturing

Two truths and a lie:
– Denise hates cleaning
– Denise wants a pet miniature cow named Mooshie
– As a youngster, Denise smuggled baby bunnies into a nudist colony

Jessica Burfield (she/her)

Lumos Team Doula

Jessica is a Northern Wisconsin (for real ‘Up North’ – we are talking Superior, not Wausau!) transplant who has called the Madison area home for over 20 years. She currently resides in Middleton with her husband, three kids, two cats, and very needy Boston Terrier.

She graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in Social Welfare and rose colored glasses determined to change the world. She left working outside the home in 2006 when her first baby was born. Ever since she has worked a variety of jobs at home alongside parenting her three kiddos. She pined over what to be when she grew up and wondered if she would ever find her calling. Her husband told her she would be a really great “Rent-A-Friend” – since she struggled with the transition into parenthood and felt very alone in that journey, she wished she really could have rented that friend back when her kids were small.

She saw an article one day talking about postpartum doulas and was stunned. She had no idea this was even a thing and felt completely drawn to learn more. It felt like Rent-A-Friend with non-judgemental support and evidence-based information! She took the leap and trained as a postpartum doula and loved learning more about the doula world.

After working strictly in postpartum for a year she knew she wanted to become a birth doula. She wondered if she may discover that the birth world was not for her but instead she fell in love with all things pregnancy and birth.

She is thrilled to have found her doula partner and the entire Lumos team!

What she loves about this work:
Hearing people’s stories, connecting with humans on growing, birthing and raising humans, helping people feel empowered in their choices, the constant learning this work encourages and provides, seeing the look on people’s faces when the see their baby for the first time

Likes: organizing, reading, dancing, yoga, summer, dresses, naps, beverages and conversation, dabbling in mixed-media art

Dislikes: being cold, when people lack empathy, swimming, when technology doesn’t work, clutter, cooking

Dream Vacation: relaxing on a beach with a book (near the water but not in)

Words to describe Jessica: good humored, honest, reliable, organized, caring, good listener

Two truths and a lie:
– Jessica learned to tap dance as an adult
– She can speak two languages
– She is a published writer
